Outline
The
Earth Skills Semester Program will take place in a series
of phases, each building upon the previous one. Below is an
outline used in the winter semester of 2002. For each new
ESSP we change and adapt the outline to make use of variety
of wilderness areas selected for our trips, the season of
the year, and a continuously growing knowledge of how to improve
the program. The following is a sample outline only.
Phase
1
Phase
1 will take place at the farm in Brunswick, Maine, and will
consist of an advanced basic skills course and introduction
to the many fields of study which will be ongoing throughout
the program.

Phase
2
Phase 2 will
consist of a snow-walking trip in northern Maine. We will
travel by snowshoe, transport our gear by toboggan, and stay
in natural shelters and wall tents. A strong emphasis will
be placed on the traditional living skills used in the northern
forest.

Phase
3
Phase 3 will
be spent working on skills at the farm in Brunswick.

Phase
4
Phase 4 will
be a canoe trip through Florida's Everglades National Park
via the 99-mile Wilderness Waterway.

Phase
5
Phase 5 will
be spent working on skills at the farm in Brunswick.

Phase
6
Phase 6 will
take place in the woods of Maine and/or New Hampshire.

Phase
7
Phase 7 will
be spent working on skills at the farm in Brunswick.

Phase
8
Phase 8 will
be take place in the woods of Maine. It will consist of a
walkabout where students and instructors travel through the
forest with minimal gear. The culmination of this phase will
be solo survival experience, where students will have the
option of spending several days on their own in the woods.

Phase
9
Phase 9 will
be spent at the farm in Brunswick, working on papers, finalizing
portfolios, and working on final projects.

Phase
10
Phase 10 is
the Earth Skills Symposium. During the symposium, students
will present final papers, projects, and portfolios. The event
will be open to the public.
